Baby Greys

12 Week old Grey |
|
Our hand reared babies are raised in a
home environment.
We use Hagen's Tropican, an especially
manufactured hand-rearing product, which is all they eat
until they are 7 or 8 weeks old.
The weaning process begins around that time, with the
babies being offered fruit and vegetables, soaked pulses
and soaked seed, all in addition to their baby food. |

As they begin to eat, the baby food is gradually
decreased, until they are fully weaned. The age depends
on the type of bird. African Greys are weaned by the age
of 11 - 12 weeks, whilst macaws are around 16 weeks
before they are fully independent. Like any babies they
all have their own personalities and some are quicker at
eating than others. Cockatoos are notoriously slow at
weaning. |

When they leave for their new homes, we always include a
guide to care and feeding for the new owners. Fresh fruit and vegetables
are important to a bird's health, and a diet of only dried parrot food
or sunflower seed is inadequate. Crisps, chips and chocolate are also
very bad for a bird's health as the fat damages the liver. Many owners
think they are giving their birds a treat with these tit-bits, but in
fact they are killing them, as their digestive system cannot cope these
processed foods. There are plenty of parrot treats on the market which
won't damage your bird's health.
A good multi vitamin is also a good idea,
we recommend Zoovite which we sell in the
shop. We can also supply this multi-vitamin by mail order. |
| Adequate housing is also important for
your bird's well being. We stock a good range of suitable
cages. The cage should be positioned away from draughts
and out of direct sunlight. Parrots should be let out for
regular exercise, but be aware that they can get into
lots of trouble if left unsupervised. Hot pans, electric
wires, poisonous house plants and open windows all
present potential danger. Toxic fumes can also be deadly
to birds. The fumes from burning non-stick pans, gas
boilers or even gloss paint can cause real harm or even
death. If you are supplying natural branches for your
perches make sure the wood used is not poisonous. |
